Why have I been reading those Alan Furst novels when I could have been reading Ambler?

That I would really enjoy this book is predictable: the main character (Latimer) is an academic with a spectatorial interest in espionage and dirty tricks, he travels all over Europe (ending up in Paris) dipping into archives, interviewing experts, etc. That's something that I would be happy doing. I would be less happy, as Latimer is, being transformed from spectator into participant in the world of robbery, assassination and conspiracy.

When the Eurasian Credit Trust is discussed, this could almost be mistaken for Pynchon.
