As I was reading this, I realized that I had read it a couple of years ago for my other bookgroup. I think I liked it better this time around. It is the story of a young boy (at the beginning of the book he is five years old) as he grows up in South Africa during WWII. His family is English, but he has an African nanny, is sent to an Afrikaner boarding school and has a German mentor. All of these influences, along with many positive and negative experiences, shape him as he matures into a confident young man.
