Crave (The Fallen Angels, #2)
by J.R. Ward
by J.R. Ward
OK, my final thoughts on "Crave": I enjoyed the book and found myself FINALLY getting into the "Fallen Angels" series. I guess there was so much worldbuilding necessary to set up that the first book was very hard for me to understand, much less get excited about. I feel, however, that the WARDen's writing style is just too close to her BDB style and that, IMHO, knocked a star off my rating for lack of originality. Ward's street-talk was a refreshing change, and it was appropriate, for the street-tough Brothers. I think a form of street slang is feasible for her mostly ex-military Angels but it just wasn't believable to "hear" our blue-blood female attorney heroine thinking in street. Totally stopped me in my tracks each time. Plus there were inconsistencies related to the lingo that better editing would have erased. Ward is certainly able to write in a more traditional style as evidenced by her delightful Jessica Bird persona but Brother-speak was her claim to fame and she must not want to give it up. So keep writing BDB books, Missy, and forget the FA stuff! No more "Nike-ing across the desert" and other trying-too-hard (I got SO sick of her overuse of hyphanated(sp?) phrasing I could have screamed!)verbage!
Okay, now that I've finished my rant, I must admit that this 2nd book in the FA series drew me in as the first didn't. I think I'm able now to appreciate a series where there really is no main character; where there are no traditional H/H's with good-ole Happy Ever Afters. I was rooting for a good ending for Issac and Grier, but I was also rooting for Jim and Issac (read the book! It'll make sense then!) and even Issac and Matthias. I now am excited enough to anticipate the 3rd installment. Wow. Wasn't sure that would happen with this series!
