One of the most well-crafted books for children that I have ever read, this novel combines my favorite literary devices with a cast of extraordinarily lovable characters. The story is one of orphaned children with various gifts--and yes, being unbelievably stubborn is a gift--going on a secret mission to save the world. But there are so many beautiful layers of meaning to that story that no one could dare call it trite. Political, educational, and fascinating in turn, this is a book that anyone could enjoy, not just children being introduced to the concepts of dramatic foil, foreshadowing, and metaphor for the first time.
