Baseball,Poetry, and Ballet...hmmm...you would never think they could come together, but they do! House Jackson, ace pitcher for the Aurora County All-Stars broke his elbow last year, or should I say, a girl named Finesse, accidently caused him to break his elbow. This event caused him to miss all of last year's baseball season and they lost to their rivals, the Redbugs. OUCH! His recuperation included spending time with a crotchety old man in a decrepit house that every kid in Aurora is mortally scared of. House, however, never tells anyone that he reads to Mean-Man Boyd, aka, Norwood Rhinehart Beauregard Boyd everyday and is growing fond of him day-by-day.
But now, the town's 200th anniversary celebration is scheduled on the same day, at the same time of the re-match with the Redbugs. All the town's mamas want their boys to be in the celebration pageant, but the boys want to play baseball. House comes up with a plan to do both, with all the companionship, comraderie, and citizenship one town can possibly stand. In the end, House learns so much more about secrets kept, family revealed and humanity that he ever dreamed would come through when playing his favorite game, baseball.
