Read from October 27 to November 04, 2010

Gerda Weissmann Klein was born in Poland, in 1924. She had a pretty happy childhood and family and friends who cared about her significantly. But in 1939, when Gerda was just fifteen years old, Hitler invaded and conquered Poland. Gerda and her family were eventually separated and Gerda was sent to different labor camps, but luckily she had friends to help keep her going. Gerda always knew that she would be liberated and after five years she finally was. This memoir was written by Gerda and it tells of her story and her experiences through the Holocaust. She tells of the family and friends she lost, the people she met and the horrific hardships that were forced upon the Jewish people that surrounded her. I think that this would be an excellent supplemental book for middle school students and up who are studying this time period. I think that the author is able to really bring to life the conditions and hardships that she and others endured during this time.
