Torin Kerr, promoted to Gunnery Sargaent... at base, providing information about the Slyss... and is invited to go to Crucible, the marine 'real life' training facility... before she goes, she and Craig realize that no one remembers their freedom from Big Yellow via its escape pod (craig wants them to make good on his right to salvage)...

She goes to Crucible as guard to a doctor and a major, who is recovering - having had an arm regrown... but almost immediately when they get there, the drones begin attacking them with the intent of killing...

it ends up that escape pod/Big yellow was actually The Other - molecules (like the borg) that work together... and that they invaded the major - and through the major were reprogramming the drones...

With Kerr as lead, they manage to anticipate and use the resources available to them to ward off the other... wry humor - when they send the doctor (only one in noncombat clothes) to set charges in building of the drones; when one of the Daitaken is altering to Witaken, and needs sex in order to complete the change (remember the Daitaken are always ready for sex, and wear maskers so that their pherenomes don't entice others) and Kerr convinces them they must help the Witaken because he is currently a marine; they cut the major's arm (full of Other molecules) off with an ax... hmmmm... And she sets up a communication with them, asking them to stop the drones, and they simply respond, no, they are still gathering data.

A few times Kerr considers if the 3 races are holding things back, and notes that humans, etc. have never been in on negotiations with the Others.

And most of them make it off okay... and she reconnects with Craig (who had helped the military realize that the Other was infiltrating them)... and she considers making things more permanent with Craig...
