beauty so great it's monstrous, class distinction so intense it rules everything, shame and prostitution are just a few of the themes of this japanese psychological thriller. half swiss and half japanese the sister of beautiful Yuriko narrates the book. Yuriko and classmate Kazue end up dead prostitutes and this book recounts their youth and trajectory to that goal and it's weird, to say the least. Seedy japanese life is always interesting but the plot gets bogged down at times. Also, I read the American translation was given a different ending which leads a bad taste in my mouth.
