Abandoned. I was looking forward to this because of the many great reviews, but found it hard going. Although told in first-person points of view by different characters of different ages and both genders at different times, there was a dispassionate sameness to each section. The author seemed to have little interest in making clear who was narrating each section -- it was just I-I-I for much of it. No quotation marks and paragraphs plodding on for a page or more.

A desk was apparently the key to something important, but I had many other interesting books waiting and just couldn't stick it out.

The premise reminded me of a short story I had in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine many years ago titled THE CALENDAR CHEST. It was a winner in the on-going (then at least) "Department of First Stories" category.
