I liked this book. There was just a little something clunky about how the plot twists were revealed that kept me back from a four star. Also maybe it was because I took so long to read it but I kept on thinking, "Why does the Sounis king need the rock? What happens to the person with the rock again?" In other words I couldn't remember WHY the important things were important - but that's probably more my fault for reading it during the holidays than the author.

Also the narrator has a lot of attitude and talks back to everyone. I almost didn't buy this was a few hundred years ago in a new land - he seemed like a punk kid you'd run into today. It wasn't until halfway through the book I convinced myself there were probably punk kids during all eons of time. By the end I did end up liking Gen, but not as much as the magus.

Also, I did like it enough to continue reading the series - I think #4 was released this year and is getting Newbery Buzz.

Dawn This is a great book--a long time favorite of mine! I'll be interested to see what you think, Kristine. There are three more books which come after.
