This book is underrated and overshadowed by The Woman Warrior but just as good, perhaps more readable even. We found a 1st edition hardcover at The Strand in NYC a few years back and while getting it autographed, Maxine Hong Kingston (who is a terribly cool woman) corrected the final word in the book - it made a huge difference in the meaning of the sentence!

Janice I just finished reading this book and puzzled over the last sentence as well. I notice that I read the first edition. I'm very curious about what that word was.
My copy reads "Good. Now I could watch the young men who listen."
