This is a very strange and disturbing book, but much of it is very beautifully written. The first half is almost like a straight Freudian case study with verses (extremely explicit and graphic)and "journals" by the patient, and the last half (or 1/3, maybe) addresses the Holocaust. The case study serves to make us intimately acquainted with the people who will die horribly and unexpectedly at the hands of the Nazis very early in their occupation of Russia. Not for everyone.
