Medeival CSI. The protagonist seems anachronistically modern in her understanding of germ theory, etc.

The book was initially hard to get into, but once I got to know them, I found the characters compelling.

However, as I neared the end, it occured to me that this would be an excellent series. Having been introduced to the protagonists already, I think the next book will be easy to get into.
