Not the best read of the year, but an admirable effort from former Senator Gary Hart. I was actually surprised that a former senator could write a book that was so well-written. The last twenty pages in my opinion were the best of the entire book, and I did enjoy the overall premise of looking at Monroe as the first national security president. However, at times, it was repetitive, and there was a huge focus on the Monroe Doctrine at the expense of other parts of Monroe's presidency. It's worth checking out, especially since it's a rather quick read, but I think there are better Monroe biographies out there.
