Not as good as I remembered. Linda Howard is very hit-or-miss for me. This was really more of a miss.
Faith Devlin and Gray Rouillard have a shared past. Their parents were lovers. Faith's mom was known as the town slut while Gray's dad tom-catted around town. But when the two disappear together, Gray becomes furious and throws Faith's family out of town.
When Faith comes back to town 12 years later to learn the truth, Gray is at first furious and then attracted. He has always been attracted to her (since she was 14? Squick!) and it has come to a fore with her running around trying to find answers. He tries to run her out of town again with the excuse that he's just trying to protect his mother and sister. Frankly, for a similar, but much better, story, I'd suggest Nora Roberts' "Carolina Moon."
