Sovereign was a great historical mystery. It focused on Henry VIII’s Progress to the North, which was intended to intimidate the northerners and prevent a second revolt. The characters were well-developed, the settings were vivid (particularly the gloomy bleakness of York and the miserable travel south), the plot was intelligent and based (to a large degree) on fact and the various sub-plots/backstories were all kept in balance. Shardlake, the protagonist and narrator, was as memorable and entertaining as ever and the mysteries he had to solve remained intriguing to the very last page.
