The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1)

(Audible Review)
My two cents:
I was not impressed upon reading this book. Perhaps it was a different experience altogether having to hear the audible version rather than reading the book itself. Perhaps the flaws of the book stood out more when heard rather than when read. That or the narrator of the book was simply a poor reader and just didn't do a good job narrating. Though, I'm quite sure it's the former rather than the latter that I found this book's prose juvenile and unsophisticated. I found the dialogues cheesy. It didn't help that the slang was annoying at best. "Clunker, Shankface?"
The book lacked character development. The characters appeared flat and emotionless. And even when emotion was clearly being conveyed in the pages, it didn't move me or affect me in any way. The only smart character in the book of course is Teresa, because she's the only female existing in the pages. Tommy, the main character, has the possibility of being likable if more life was infused into his character. That's it, the book would be great if there was more life and color to it!
The only redeeming quality of this book was its plot and premise. Can the maze be solved? Could anyone survive the maze? How was this book going to end? I was intrigued and just wanted to know how it was all going to end. It was the only reason I kept reading despite how annoyed I was with the writing style. And now, knowing how this book ended, I am annoyed with myself because I know I'm going to grab the sequel!
I despise you James Dashner for being so sneaky! You know you'd hook me into reading Scorch Trials by ending Maze Runner that way! Grrr! Epilogue my ass!!

The writing seems a little too juvenile...at least that's the impression I'm getting as it's narrated via its audible version.

I thought that at first but the story gets more intriguing as it goes on. It's not amazing but it is pretty entertaining. Keep truckin... ;-)
