From the inventive mind of Kate Elliott comes a tale of fusion steampunk, fantasy, and alternative history – with intelligent dinosaurs! Can any fantasy reader ask for more?

The world of COLD MAGIC shows how important it is to know who has written the history you are reading. Cat Barahal lives in a world where the Phoenicians fought the Romans to a standstill at least once, and she’s a descendant of that proud tradition. The Celts met the Africans and the Phoenicians when a plague caused the latter groups to relocate north – but a great ice wall prevents much further movement over the pole. And something else also stops northern investigation. The magicians, especially the feared Cold Mages, believe that great magic powers guard the northern wastes.

Cat belongs to a branch of a family known as investigators, messengers, and occasionally spies. They are not wealthy, but they get by, and are educated at good schools. Cat is an orphan, rereading her late father’s journals and bound through love and mischief to her favorite cousin, Bee. But a sudden upheaval causes her family to marry her off to a cold mage – and then the chaos begins.

For this marriage is nothing like it appears on the surface. The mages, the princes who rule are not what they seem. The man who would be Napoleon, and is more a man of law, is not who he seems. And finally Cat is nothing whatsoever who and what she thought she was...and therein lies the tale.

Intricate and yet moving at a gallop, you will believe in the motives of all these people, such as you know them, and you will want to know what happens next. I can’t say more without giving things away, and this is a book of mighty secrets. Everyone has a secret, even from allies.

Can’t wait for the next one!
