Sorry, this is where you lose me... It was just okay. Seph was an interesting character, but about halfway through I had to step back and go, "really, now?"

I was less charmed by the characters. There were interesting shades of grey among the teen characters, but the adults (especially the villains) were so hopelessly flat it grated on me. Wicked characters like Leicester are okay in MG fiction if it's a whimsical and funny Dahl-ish book, but I think I expected something more sophisticated.

Actually I think that's it--in Warrior Heir, Leander Hastings had such mysterious motives I kept flipping the page to see what he would do. That was missing in this book. Though--and this is a pretty big though--I could predict every single plot twist, readers (teen boy readers, especially) that haven't read a lot of fantasy might really enjoy this.
