As usual, Bujold creates wonderfully complex and real characters. Unlike most authors, her main characters rarely fit the stereotypes and have sufficient weakness without compensation in other areas. I enjoyed Bujold's exploring of the merging of two different cultures. However, I missed her usual philosophical delving into new religions and their impact on fantastical worlds and people. This may be coming later, because it is a four book series.

In spite of loving the characters, the two star rating is for too much focus on the romance (uncharacteristic of Bujold). There is a far, too explicit sex scene at one point. However, I'm hoping that now that the sex is overwith, the series will get on with the more interesting aspects of the story. I'll give book two a try, but if it carries on in the same tone, I'm afraid I will have to say goodbye to some great characters.
