** spoiler alert ** I hated this book. I didn't necessarily enjoy it throughout, but when I got to the end, and saw how she ended it all, I was so mad! there is nothing likable about this woman. She is spoiled and selfish--her children may have grieved her loss, but they were better off without a self-absorbed trollop like herself in their lives. the way to self-realization, as this book seems to imply she's finding, is NOT to break every vow you've made, betray every relationship, abandon your children, and kill yourself in the end because you just can't deal with it anymore. This reminds me of two other books I hated--the Wuthering Heights and Catcher in the Rye. if you want to read a much better book about a woman actualizing herself and making a new life for herself, despite those around her, read the Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. Not this drivel.

Pooja lol.i hated it too, i never managed to read this book fully, and i dont enjoy classics much and what u said abt edna is so true, while u read it just makes u wondeer why the heck is she doing it?.... :D

Crystal thanks! there's some classics I've enjoyed. a bunch of them, actually. but this one and those other two? yuck! classics I prefer? Jane Eyre, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Pilgrim's Progress, even the Great Gatsby. try some of them. but this? ick!

Brianna I quite enjoy L.M Montgomery. :-) I adore The Awakening, however. I guess I enjoy it literarily; many people seem to discredit the novel on the basis of Edna's character, but it is beautiful literature. I like your review, and I felt the need to comment because I like your taste in classics.

Crystal thanks, Brianna! I'm not denying it was well written. I just can't get behind a book, no matter how well written, if I hate the characters and/or situation. I guess I am not literary enough in taste for that. I don't mind others enjoying them, though. Glad you got something good from it. :)
yay for good classics! :D

Danny You didn't get the book.

Crystal obviously not.
