** spoiler alert ** Classic spy novel by le Carre. I didn't have a jacket cover, so I enjoyed reading the book and trying to figure what all the flashbacks were about (or even the basic plot). It was a little slow, but the morsels of truth the narrator discovers in the last chapters really rang true for me.

"History keeps her secrets longer than most of us. But she has one secret that I will reveal to you tonight in the greatest confidence. Sometimes there are no winners at all. And sometimes nobody needs to lose... You see your face. It's no one you remember. You wonder where you put your love, what you found, what you were after. You want to say: 'I slew the dragon, I left the world a safer place.' You can't really, not these days. Perhaps you never could."
