I spent a month in Eritrea so have a fondness for the people and area. Even though the book takes places in Ethiopia, the two countries were linked at the time of the events. The book described the places well. The characters were unusual, except that people are unusual, so to me they seemed real. The story line and the manner of telling was adept and I thought it an enjoyable read.
