I decided to indulge my love of YA lit with this book because it won the Newbery Award. I'm disappointed, and pretty surprised that the Newbery committee thought it merited an award. Luckily, it didn't require a lot of time to finish. The dialog is terrible, the plot uninteresting, and the protagonists not entirely likeable. There is one detail at the end that comes out of left field and makes no sense - the narrator's lawyer is the children's grandfather. Big secret! Huge coincidence! No explanation! The one theme that I thought interesting was the value of transformation, in this case by having a secret that illuminates one's inner being.
