I really enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle, largely because it was filled with a cast of interesting characters and had awesome female and male protagonists. Castle in the Air spends three quarters of the book focused on a handful of not-terribly-interesting male characters. Only at the very end do the women appear in force -- and every single one of them shines. They breathe life into the novel. They're fabulous. But to get to them, you have to endure two hundred pages of lackluster guys. They do have their moments, but those moments are too few for the page count.
