There's not much to this, but it's cute and the kids will like it. The beginning is a little slow, with too much time spent on introducing the characters for such a short book. As a result, the mystery is introduced and resolved in ten pages, which made the whole book feel slight. It's still an appealing early chapter book, with fun illustrations, magic powers, and (hooray!) a Hispanic main character. (I also like that Freddie solves the mystery using "brain power" instead of "zapato power." Nice!)
