Much like the first four books of the series, Lady Friday sucks you in. It was a fairly quick read, finished in my down time over two days, but given the size and the target audience (it is a Scholastic, so targeting youths more than adults), this is understandable. The series was introduced to me as "like Harry Potter, but steampunk." And while I can't quite agree with the steampunk assessment, I can agree that it fits the Harry Potter formula. That is to say, normal ordinary kid (in this instance, 12 years old) finds himself thrown head first into a strange world he never knew existed, and is told that he is a person of import, bound to do great things, etc. There are then adventures that span certain time periods (for Harry Potter it was each school year, while in Keys to the Kingdom it is grouped as the name might suggest, by day). Each book sucks you in more, and like any good series, while there is resolution, there is also a hook that makes you desire the followup book IMMEDIATELY. If I had any complaint at all about the series, it would be the fact that they are NOT as long as the Harry Potter books. There is a lot that could be done with the world and characters, and certain characters fall into obscurity never (or at least, not thusfar) to be seen again. One can only hope they are reintroduced and utilized for the following books in the series.
