Not one of my favorites in this series. It seems to be going downhill, or perhaps my tastes are changing. First off, quite a bit of it is written in 1st person like a letter which is definitely not the best way to get me into it. 3rd person inside-the-head would have been better and made the events more immediate.

The careful political intrigue seems more heavy-handed this time around. I realize that's a theme, but this time the secrets being hid weren't worth the secrecy. Character development was fine for the protagonist, but the other characters did not, which was disappointing since they were more prominent in the other books. Plot felt like it slugged toward its inexorable conclusion with few surprises, this is usually where the author excels, but this time it wasn't as good. Action sequences were not that exciting either, guess I'm expecting heroes who participate more in battle...

Violence, some, treated realistically and brutally.
Sex, nope. Language, I hardly noticed. I could recommend this to young adults.

Note though, the first three books in this series are well worth reading.
