really liked it
bookshelves: fiction, family-read
Read from October 11 to December 01, 2010

I selected this book because we happen to have a group (warren?) of rabbits that have been digging holes under our house. This book was perfect for our family read book. It had a diverse group of characters and plenty of action and adventure to keep my son interested. Absolutely charming!

Lars Guthrie Agree with your rating. This was a book I came to thinking I would not like it. I had the misconception that it was a cute story about bunnies until I read it with an eighth grader. It was required reading for her, so of course she hated it, but not me! More evidence that kids need choice. Your comment about the invasion at your house resonated because when people are visiting my parents and see rabbits in their garden and think they are adorable, my mother makes nasty remarks.

That's too bad your student didn't like this one. It was such a different book with a whole culture created around the rabbits - even having their own creation stories. We're still at odds about what to do with the rabbits under our house. We had a pet rabbit that loved to chew all of our electrical wires, so we're not too keen on having them under our house. But we don't want to be the cause of rabbit-cide. My husband has even gone to the extreme of mounting a camera over the entrance to monitor when they all leave, so he can block up the holes. Personally I think he's just having fun with his gadgets...

Lars Guthrie But maybe your husband could start a rabbit surveillance company.

Even though the student didn't like 'Watership Down,' the tutor did!
