Yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck. I hated this book. My husband and I read the first 3/4 together, and I'm telling you, every page was an effort. Finally, we both got to the point that we were kind of dreading getting into the car for any length of time (that's when we do our reading), so I skimmed the last fourth to get to the ending. Even that turned out to not be worth it.
I admit the possibility that I am philisophically underdeveloped, and that for someone with Big Questions on their mind, this might be the most fabulous book. Or, maybe others who like the book saw beauty in the writing that I missed. But, I just generally hated it.
One good point: the dialogue, especially what wasn't said, was extremely insightful and real-to-life. If I learn nothing else from Salinger, then at least I can use him as a good example of keeping your characters' communications real.
