"You are leaning back against a post that may or may not be structural with regard to the building, but which feels essential to your own maintenance of an upright position."

For this phrase alone, this is one of my favorite books. Plus I was a 20-something at the same time as the protagonist (except I didn't have near as much money to waste on drugs, thank God).
