If you've read and love Kim by Rudyard Kipling you've got to read this book -- this is the factual tales upon which Kim was built. Each chapter tells the tale of one Westerner (incl Japanese and Russian) explorer/adventurer/soldier of fortune who managed to get into Tibet during the 19th or 20th C. when Tibet was totally closed to the outside world. Absolutely fascinating tales set in what has to be the harshest environment in the populated world. Hopkirk is an excellent story teller to boot. If you can't put on your travelling shoes, curling up with this book is perhaps the next best thing.
