I enjoyed some previous Andrews novels (especially the 4 girls known as the Orphans) but this book just was freaky, annoying and just plain weird!
Heaven lives in a rather 1800's way, out in the hills of some southern state, in really primitive conditions with her father, grandfather and way too many siblings to count. Her life sucks horribly, but things go from bad to worse: her mother runs away, her father starts showing an interest in her body, her younger siblings are sold into adoption by her abusive father, then her older siblings and soon enough it's all come to the point that we know it has: groppy-hands Daddy getting his filthy paws on the goods.
I stopped reading a while before it came to that point, but I was maybe a third of the way through the story and I'm sure that that was where Andrews was headed (isn't she always?).
On top of that, I was actually listening to the audiobook version of this novel. It was being read by this really old lady, granny of a voice, who had this squeaky high-pitch and just irritated the f*** out of me! Maybe with an actual book I could have read on, but I really don't see it happening at all; the story is just too icky.
Andrews, try writing something positive already; not so much abuse, incest, paedophilia, etc.

The story is finally picking up, I've got the feeling that it's right on the verge of something important happening. So far the characters are interesting, although I am having difficulty with the time frame of the setting. The Casteel's live in such a vague time frame that it's difficult to pin down." | |

V.C. Andrews died in 1986. The books after that weren't really written by her.
