On his way to stay with friends in Leicestershire, Captain Jack Staple finds himself at a toll-gate in the Pennines, where he's quickly drawn into mysterious goings-on and into a romance with Miss Nell Stornaway. I didn't think the romance quite mixed with the murder and smuggling plot threads, or maybe it's just that I like a little more romance in my Heyer. Still, this was a fun read, and I loved Captain Jack.
