This was my absolute favorite book growing up, and I have read it countless times since. It is the story of a girl whose tribe was removed from their island. She and her brother were left behind for several years and had to survive alone until the boats came back for them. I spent so much time fantasizing about the life she lived--the house the built, the clothes and jewelry she made, the food she caught, the weapons she fashioned. I have taught this book to low level reading students as well, and they loved it too.
