Ken Follett is a wonderful storyteller, creating historical fiction with strong characters and this particular story is no exception. It's set against the backdrop of WWI, and follows the lives of several characters, from the low born Ethel and Billy to the well-to-do Maud, Walter and Fitz to the scheming Lev and his idealistic brother Grigori. I can't vouch for how true some of the historical elements are even though they are dealt with at a high level, but I found myself more interested in the interpersonal relationships than the war aspect. This may be due to the fact that I've reached my saturation point with reading about the topic rather than the writing skills.

Not as strong as Pillars of the Earth and while I'm not in a rush to read the next two books, it is something to keep you entertained for several days.
