Former detective Jackson Brodie doesn't quite know what to do with himself now that he has inherited millions and retired. He's on a trip to Edinburgh with his actress girlfriend (a character from Case Histories) and gradually gets caught up in a sequence of events that begins with one driver going after another with a baseball bat. Characters include a writer of light mysteries, the wife of a real estate/mob guy, and a female police detective with a shoplifting son. Each character is sharply but lovingly delineated, and Atkinson's tart view of society comes through with wicked glee.
