What a great read - it turned me noir novels and instantly made me seek out more Willeford. The writing is sharp and direct, almost surgical in its precision. The most remarkable thing is that, really, the best sections amount to little action. The protagonist looking for work, scrounging for food/drink money for him and his lady, lounging with her in a rundown pub or at home in his rooming house.

A delicious dessert.
