I'm a huge fan of Krauss. This book stands as every reason why. Though a departure of tone (and even style on some levels) from The History of Love, the quality of the storytelling is equally profound, beautiful and heartbreaking. Krauss manages to capture the deepest moments of the human psyche and elevates the mundane to the sublime. A novel expressly concerned with grief, it is not a death knell but a wake. At times philosophical, comedic, mysterious and surprising, Krauss transcends genre, time and mode to create the Great House she describes in the final chapters. Cannot praise enough.
