The first half of this volume follows the lives of the gang within the prison walls during mostly peaceful and uneventful times, although the threat of the Woodbury residents is constantly looming over their heads. The second half ratchets up the action with an ambush and bloody fight to keep the prison. There are numerous, game-changing surprises near the end that shake up the lives of the remaining survivors and propel the series into a new direction.
