Not my favorite Steinbeck, but still amazing because it's, well, Steinbeck. "The Winter of Our Discontent" has almost a "Catcher in the Rye" feel to it in a few places, as well as a much darker version of "It's a Wonderful Life." The book consistently surprised me, which was refreshing. It's a tragic tale, one that might be uncomfortable for many to read. It really captures the pressure to be materially successful beautifully and brutally.
