The beautifully rich language wasn't enough to save this book. The character development never really evolved enough to make you care about either one. While I could see the attempt at connecting the main character's life (George) with his father's (Howard), enough parallels were never made. Instead, the jumping back and forth seemed to interrupt the previous person's story rather than build on it or relate to it. I was very disappointed that the incredibly gorgeous writing devolved, over the course of the book, to flowery wordiness. The story development seems to have been lost in the workings of artful wording.
