Stross is a little over-impressed with his own concepts, and some of the characters (Sue in particular) could really have used additional development, but overall, Halting State was an engaging and worthwhile read. I do wish the pacing hadn't been quite so schizophrenic, as the plot is frequently moved forward by large sections of expositional dialogue instead of action. As a result, the characters' sense of urgency feels artificial at times. Still, I'd recommend it for anyone who likes Stross' particular brand of speculative cyberpunk, but especially for anyone who has ever played an online RPG.
