** spoiler alert ** Inspector Lynley, still grieving the death of his wife and unborn child, returns to the Met at the request of Acting Chief Superintendent Isabelle Ardery who hopes that this move will gain her the support of Lynley's team. The team is investigating the murder of Jemima Hastings, a young woman from the New Forest who left her boyfriend, Gordon Jossie, several months ago and fled to London. It's not known why Jshe left Gordon and abandoned her thriving cupcake business. The narrative is broken up with sections purporting to be a social worker's report about three boys who committed a brutal crime against a young child, and seems completely unconnected to the case under investigation. These parts were both disturbing and tedious. I was interested in finding out who committed the crime and why but the book was much too long at 692 pages and dragged. I disliked Isabelle Ardery and her "airline" bottles of vodka and couldn't believe the developments between her and Lynley.
