In Melanie Dickerson's debut novel you find a teen fiction of Sleeping Beauty, retold.

Rose is an apprentice healer and the lowly daughter of a woodcutter in 1386 in Saxony, Holy Roman Empire. She is unique for her time and station because Frau Garuscha, her mentor, taught her to read Latin, the language of the day.

The story begins with The local Duke's sons return home from school. Lord Hamlin, the elder brother, is in an arranged marriage betrothal since the age of 5. He is a very dutiful and responsible person that the region's people look up to.

But he is out to find an evil sorcerer who is threatening his betrothed.

When he is injured, he meets Rose, and she starts to confound him, because now he is enamored with someone other than his betrothed but this goes directly against his inborn duty-boundedness. (if that is a word.)

Rose also likes Lord Hamlin, but then meets his brother, Lord Rupert.

Lord Rupert is mostly the opposite of his brother. He is out to make a conquest out of Rose and Rose is starting to fall for it.

This book kept me guess the plot even though there was heavy foreshadowing that wasn't even a red herring.

An excellent retelling.

Things I didn't like about the book:
-all the hand-kissing. Yuck!
-Maybe a little less foreshadowing and a little more plot twists.
-only having one random chapter from the bad guys perspective kinda messed up the flow.
***Spoiler to follow****

-the future father-in-law only being gruff and mean to Rose
-the random second set of parents that Rose doesn't even know how to think of.

***Spoiler alert***
Favorite scene in the book:
The night they go through the secret tunnel.
