** spoiler alert ** This one is probably the best of Laurens' early books. There is little conflict between the characters, but the heroine's reluctance to involve herself with a domineering man is understandable, and her guilt when she is pressured to betray him is a great source of conflict towards the end. The one thing that rather startled me is that, after a few hundred pages building her guardian up as this uber-dominating villain, he turns out to be a decent guy. So after building reader expectations for this grand confrontation, it turns out to be much ado about nothing. Frustrating.
