A teacher at my school loves Aimee Bender and recommends her books to his students, so I thought I should read at least one of her books. I found the characters interesting, and I wasn't bothered by the fact that the story is more of a study of the interaction among the characters rather than action driven. However, Bender's magical realism did not hold my interest the way Alice Hoffman's does nor did I find Rose's affinity with food to be as interesting as Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate. Still, it was a pleasant read.
