Young girls who want to be knights

I saw this at the Booksmith yesterday, and I had to have it. The Song of the Lioness quartet was one of my favorite series as a kid-- I remember reading the books at summer camp, and passing the first one around, and all of us marveling over the fact that the book talked about PERIODS. I remember loving the romance love triangle story, and being thrilled with a lot of the plot and action.
Well... it's been well over ten years since I read any of these books. And I've got to say, while fun, it doesn't really match my memory-- in my memory important scenes were much longer, and there was more sex talk, and a bigger deal when she was finally revealed as a woman. I guess when I was a kid, I just imagined more, stopping to see things in my head, and dream about how I would have felt in the same place? I also identified with Alanna a lot when I was a kid, because for some stupid reason, I wanted to be a knight. And I knew women couldn't be knights, even when they DID exist. But... well, I loved the books then, and while it doesn't quite hold up, it is something that I will definitely put on my future children's bookshelves.

I liked these books a lot too, but you know what? I liked the Daine books even better. I'm not sure why, but those were definitely my favorites. Especially the third one where she gets locked up in the foreign country and makes all the animals in the city freak out. Now that I've read your review of this one, though, I'm kind of thinking I shouldn't ever reread that book, because the scene is bound to be less cool than I found it when I was younger.
