I absolutely LOVED this book! A well written murder mystery/thriller made all the more immediate for this reader because of the locale. Having grown up in the Syracuse area, and lived in many other, more southern climes, I found her malaise to be perfectly understandable. Syracuse can be oppressively hot in summer, and very dreary, especially in winter and spring. The character of Madeleine Dare was drawn largely from the author's own experience as a member of a family dripping with old wealth sensibilities. The characters had depth and certainly kept the reader engaged to find out where the tale was going. There were hints that kept the ending from being a total surprise but enough red-herrings to keep the reader guessing anyway. But, for this reader, the local color and the various place names were what made this so greatly enjoyable. For a first effort, Ms Read has produced a most satisfying read, one that will haunt. The author certainly bears watching.
