Wow, I am so pleased that I picked this book up! It was EXCELLENT! I loved the world and the characters so much.

You know how most romances show the pov's of both the hero and heroine? But even then the focus is on the heroine's pov with the hero's pov sprinkled in occasionally? This book had the reverse and I loved it! We spent most of the book firmly in Gabriel Huntley's head. I'm so glad, because his narrative voice and the innate goodness in him made that the best seat in the house.

I loved both Thalia and Gabriel, but I have to admit that Gabriel is my favorite. Being in his head gave me an empathy and love for him that I get with very few heroes. I really wish more authors did this! I loved watching him and Thalia evolve from the people they were in the beginning. They weren't unlikeable early on by any means, but they were different.

Gabriel was a man at loose ends, unsure of his future. He found himself following a path his friend proposed for him because he didn't have anything better in mind. But he jumped at the chance to have a purpose over the one proposed for him and ended up meeting Thalia. He was unsure of himself around "ladies" and was awkward and uncomfortable until he couldn't help but be himself.

Thalia was more Mongol than Englishwoman. The people and most attitudes were so much a part of her that she was a delight to read about. In the beginning she was a woman on a mission to prove herself. She had an opportunity to possibly acquire the status she longed for and she jumped at it. Along the way she and Gabriel became a unit and were much stronger together than they ever were apart. Neither of them would have made it to the end without each other. I thought that was nicely demonstrated by the village contest for the honor of guarding their treasure.

The sense of culture in this book was FABULOUS! I seriously wanted to be there with them enjoying the feeling of being "at home" no matter what ger they were in. The details of the Mongolian people and their traditions were very appreciated. I never felt that the land was "wallpaper" or the people were "caricatures," included only to be a token nod to the land the English people were occupying. The details of their lives down to the details of their wrestling really made me impressed with the author's ability to research and include details without info dumping.

Another thing that I loved about this book was the actual relationship between Gabriel and Thalia. Too often I find the "does he/she love me?" of the main characters to be tedious and forced. I like it at times, but sometimes it's nice to meet a hero and heroine who don't fight their feelings for each other. They embrace them and count themselves lucky to have found each other. That was the case here. I never doubted their attachment to each other, and they both knew they were in love even when they didn't speak of it. The conflict came from the circumstances they were in, not internal angst. It was so refreshing.

I cannot leave this review without mentioning the world. Katyana was completely right when she spoke of her difficulty labeling this book as any one thing. It was a mishmash of things, but it worked perfectly for it. I loved all the steampunk inventions that were brought up. Catullus has a quite brilliant mind, and I cannot wait to get to his book to have a peek inside it. The Heirs were an interesting enemy. I think I liked them more because I can see how their cause can come off as understandable in the beginning. It's only when you get to the deeper motives that you really see how shady it all is.

I CANNOT wait to get my hands on the next three books.

Scoundrel (The Blades of The Rose, #2) Rebel (The Blades of The Rose, #3) Stranger (The Blades of The Rose, #4)

Luckily I already own the second book, so I can jump into Bennett's mind immediately!

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker Not another steampunk book that I'm going to have to read after you've read it.... the torture, the simple torture!!!!!!!!!

Catherine LOL! It's really fun so far! The world is less intricate than that of Meljean Brook, but it's still great! Very Indiana Jones or The Mummy-esque.

Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker I have one coming to me thanks to swaptree. Yeah! I'm officially a steampunk fan.

Catherine I hope you enjoy it!

Shawna Great review, Catherine! I loved this, too, and Gabriel was such a wonderful hero. SCOUNDREL is just as good and the hero Bennett is super yummy, so you've got another awesome read to look forward to. I LOVE this series!

Catherine Thanks, Shawna!

Woohoo! I can't wait to get to know him better. Are we in his pov most of the time like we were in Gabriel's here?

Quinn Great review Catherine! I'm really looking forward to reading this one, it seems to be universally loved!

Shawna Yes, a lot of SCOUNDREL is told in Bennett's POV. You can check out my reviews for my WARRIOR and SCOUNDREL casting pics! *grin* :)

Catherine I'm sure their are naysayers out their somewhere. ;) But you're right, it does seem to be a huge hit. If this is an example of her work, I will LOVE the characters and relationships she writes. She's really shaping up to be an author to watch for me.

I hope you love it when you read it too!

Catherine Shawna wrote: "Yes, a lot of SCOUNDREL is told in Bennett's POV. You can check out my reviews for my WARRIOR and SCOUNDREL casting pics! *grin* :)"

I'll have to check out the Scoundrel review after I read it, because I want to go in fresh. Plus, I don't like visuals before I meet the characters myself. That's why I skim over covers and don't pay much attention to them. Yes, I know, I'm weird. ;)

Shawna I totally understand, Catherine. I'm that way with some authors/books, too, and often prefer to wait and read reviews after I've read it so they don't influence my opinion.

Catherine I usually don't read reviews for books I know I want to read. I read them after to compare my opinion or have someone to squee with. But I do appreciate reviews when I'm on the fence or I've never heard of it. Then they draw me in.

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish Great review, Catherine. I've got this one sitting on my shelves and now I'm wishing I had found a way to work it into this month's challenges!

Shawna That's exactly it!

I hope you get to it soon! I want to see what you think of it!

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish Someone needs to stick this on the LK November HELP thread so I can include in those challenges!

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish Or is it already there?

***Whispers*** Don't let this get out, but one of the rules is that you can't read something YOU submitted.

Of course, I have no record of who submitted what, but the list is supposed to be made up of favorite reads, so I can't add it because I haven't read it!!!

Tori smexys_sidekick Love this series! Have you read Scoundrel yet? even better I thought.

Heh. Heh. Heh. Why, look up "subtle" in the dictionary and my picture is right there.

I just started it!

LOL!

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish Catherine, have you read the prequel in the Half Past Dead anthology?

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish I'm ordering Scoundrel (The Blades of The Rose, #2) tonight, pre-ordering Rebel (The Blades of The Rose, #3) and pre-ordering Happy Ever After (Bride Quartet #4) for my daughter.

Catherine No, I haven't read the prequel. I usually stay away from anthologies unless I hear that it's a MUST before reading the actual series. Like in Alpha & Omega.

I have that Nora Roberts books preordered too. :)

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish My daughter has LOVED that series!

Catherine It's one of my least favorite of her series, but I need some closure! :) I am a large Nora Roberts fan! I prefer her older style though.

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish I've not ready anything by her at all, yet. I'll be reading this series probably in June for wedding themed challenges. :)

Catherine If you're meh on it, I'd recommend trying out some of her older stuff before writing her off!

Hidden Riches True Betrayals Birthright and her older trilogies are all ones I've reread many, many times.

I stopped Nora Roberts after Tribute. I like her older stuff better myself. Of course, I'll always love her other half-JD Robb to death. :) The prequel in Half Past Dead was FAB!!!

Rane Awesome Review Catherine! *off to search for this series*

Catherine I keep on reading her, because sometimes I get lucky and love one of her new ones. I miss the spark that I used to get with every Nora Roberts book I read. :( She had some really fabulous ones that I've read so many times that I've lost the ability to wait for a while and reread. They're all permanently embedded there. :) That doesn't stop me from rereading anyway. ;P

Ah! I forgot the fabulous Carnal Innocence! Loved that one too.

I pretty much love all her old ones.

Catherine Rane wrote: "Awesome Review Catherine! *off to search for this series*"

Thanks! I hope you get it soon so we can chat about it.

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish These are the books I have by Roberts:

Roberts, Nora- Carolina Moon, Hot Ice, Montana Sky (Circle Trilogy-Morrigan’s Cross) {Key Trilogy - Key of Valor, Key of Knowledge, Key of Light HC}

Which do you recommend I start with?

Catherine Out of that selection I liked Carolina Moon the best. Then Montana Sky.

I was not really a fan of either of those trilogies--I felt they were her weakest. Hot Ice is one of her old skinny books that I haven't tracked down. So, I can't really give my opinion of it.

Catherine Yep!

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish Nice! Thank you... if I can manage to spell October.... LOLOL

Catherine No problem!

Does your daughter prefer her newer stuff?

UniquelyMoi *Dhestiny* BlithelyBookish She loves her JD Robb series and the Bride Quartet. I think that's all she's read.

Quinn LOL Catherine! NR's Key trilogy was one of my favorites of hers! I haven't read many of her single titles, but love her trilogies. I thought the Brides series was pretty weak for her, and I didn't really like the first in the Circle trilogy but thought the others were OK.

Catherine LOL, Quinn! I preferred her older trilogies like the Dream trilogy, the Irish trilogy, and the Three Sisters trilogy.

Quinn The Irish trilogy was what started me off on her! I really must read more of her stand alones. I haven't been able to find another contemp romance author I enjoy as much.

Katyana Great review! And I completely agree with you about everything! :O (I know, what the heck, right?)

As a side note, reading your review reminded me of the amazing Mongol culture in this book... and that reminded me of the Mongol Horde in Iron Duke. Is it Mongol month in the world of steampunk literature, or what?

Catherine I love her work. I'm not usually a contemporary fan - too picky - but she always works for me.

Have you read any Victoria Dahl? I've really enjoyed what I've read of her stuff.

Catherine Katyana wrote: "Great review! And I completely agree with you about everything! :O (I know, what the heck, right?)

I know! I thought of just that when I started Warrior too. I guess Mongolia is the "it" culture right now. :P

Quinn Thanks, Catherine. I love finding a new (to me) author. Do you have any particular favs of hers?

Catherine She only has 4 contemporary books so far. (She writes historicals too)

There's one stand alone and a trilogy.

Crazy for Love - Standalone

Talk Me Down (Tumble Creek, #1) Start Me Up (Tumble Creek, #2) Lead Me On (Tumble Creek, #3) - Tumble Creek trilogy

I've liked them all. You might want to try out her trilogy though. Those have more widespread appeal. I think the OCD hero of Crazy For Love irritated some. I thought he was cute. :) I wrote a review of it if you're interested.

Quinn Thanks again, Catherine, I'll check them out.

Catherine No problem! The style isn't like Nora Roberts, but it's still good. They feel like real contemporary people. Know what I mean?
